Last Thursday, May 28, during the STIC Conference held in Santo Domingo and organized by the National Cryptologic Center of Spain (CCN), served as a stage to launch the Parliamentary Group that will share experiences and support the development of cybersecurity legislation in the Latin American region.

The initiative has the leadership of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and with the spatial participation of the CCN, and the Center for Citizen Cybersecurity (CCC) of UNICARIBE.

During the meeting, the protagonists had the opportunity to share the current development of cybersecurity law initiatives and the concerns shared in the region. Javier Candau, deputy director general of the CCN, shared the imperative need to work as a block and with the necessary tools that allow neutralizing cybercriminals, this statement was joined by Marlon Molina, director of the JAC, who proposed working through principles and good practices that allow better understanding of the development of technologies and the impact on society before the creation of laws, since it is not easy to change and update legislation.

Moisés Benamor, director of parliaments at the OAS and who chairs the group, urged that the cybersecurity agenda be part of the agenda of each State, thus allowing to unify criteria and work on cyber defense, the digital shield, and the resilience of nations. In this sense, José Cepeda, Member of the European Parliament, highlighted the importance of education in cybersecurity for legislators and advisors, “unifying criteria also involves knowledge of the language of information technologies”, adding that “legislators also need continuous training in collaboration with academic institutions and experts in the field”.

The day closed with a message from Javier Candau reminding that the National Security Scheme implemented by the CCN in Spain in the public sector is an opportunity to be used as a tool and a set of good practices.
