Professor Julián Peña, Director of the Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Management and Renewable Energy and the Center for Analysis and International Studies at UNICARIBE (CAYEI), has recently published a scientific article in the ACS OMEGA journal of the American Chemical Society. This research focuses on the application of semiconductor materials in photocatalysis.

The study, of international scope, involved seven universities from three Latin American countries, focusing on the antimicrobial properties of films of the semiconductor titanium dioxide (TiO2) modified with zinc oxide (ZnO) to combat the fungus Fusarium oxysporum. This microorganism attacks carnation crops, causing great economic losses. The study shows a 90% decrease in the growth of this pathogen, opening a new door to the application of photocatalysis in this important economic sector.
