As part of the professional training of the Environmental Management and Renewable Energy Degree, a group of students from the University of the Caribbean (UNICARIBE) made an enriching technical visit to the Calabaza I Photovoltaic Park, located in Galeón, Peravia province, and developed by ACCIONA Energía.

The students were accompanied by Juan Carlos Cuevas Mármol, Coordinator of the Environmental Management and Renewable Energy Career, and César Roberto Reynoso, Coordinator of the Hotel and Tourism Career.

Calabaza I is ACCIONA Energía’s first project in the Dominican Republic and one of the most representative solar plants in the country. With a peak capacity of 58.16 MWp, this facility has more than 106,000 photovoltaic modules, capable of generating an annual average of 106,877 MWh, equivalent to the consumption of some 54,000 homes.

In addition to its energy impact, the project has a strong commitment to sustainability: it avoids the emission of approximately 81,000 tons of CO₂ per year and was built with 43% local labor, generating 207 direct and indirect jobs in the community of Galeón.

This experience allowed future professionals to learn about solar photovoltaic technology and understand the real impact of clean energy in the country’s energy transition. The activity reinforces UNICARIBE’s commitment to the integral formation of its students, providing them with key tools to build a more sustainable future.
