The University of the Caribbean (UNICARIBE) together with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) launched an innovative initiative for the creation of the Network of Universities and Businesses in the Dominican Republic, with the objective of minimizing food losses and food waste (FWL) in agri-food systems.
The announcement was made on September 19 of this year, during a sensitization and awareness meeting that brought together representatives from the academic, business and government sectors, which allowed attendees to exchange experiences and explore opportunities for collaboration in areas such as education, research and communication. This activity is part of the Letter of Agreement between UNICARIBE and FAO, and has the collaboration of the University Goal for Sustainable Development, as well as the Food Bank Chair of the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM-GESPLAN).
Dr. Rodrigo Castañeda, FAO Representative in the Dominican Republic, emphasized that “reducing food waste is not only a technical challenge, but also an ethical and social commitment. With this Network, we are creating a space for innovation, cooperation and joint action, ensuring that food reaches the tables and is not lost in the process.”
Dr. Emilio Mínguez, Rector of UNICARIBE, said that the creation of this Network aims to implement collective measures that not only promote a more sustainable environment, but also generate a real impact in the fight against hunger and poverty in our communities, ensuring that more people have access to nutritious and affordable food, since reducing food waste has a significant impact on the environment, society and the economy.
With this initiative, the Dominican Republic aligns itself with a global effort to combat food losses and waste. This commitment aims to develop more sustainable, inclusive and resilient agri-food systems, benefiting the entire population and contributing to a more just and prosperous future.
In the same vein, Dr. José Alejandro Aybar, Chancellor of UNICARIBE, said, today we meet to reflect on an initiative of great impact that addresses the reality of many in our population, which is at different socioeconomic levels.
At the inauguration of our Educational Credit Foundation, we had the opportunity to conduct interviews with several students. One of these stories touched me deeply. We met with young people facing unimaginable challenges, as many of them struggle to get their education without having the most basic thing: food on their tables.
We must join forces to help those around us. This is not just a motivational speech; it is a deeper call to action. Each of us has the power to make a difference in the lives of those who need our support.
