In the framework of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities and the International Day of the Blind, and consistent with its commitment to promote inclusive education and respect for diversity, the University of the Caribbean (UNICARIBE), in coordination with the Civil Aviation Board (JAC), developed the workshop “Fundamentals of Inclusion, Accessibility and Facilitation of Air Transport”. This training day brought together students, professors and collaborators.
The workshop was led by facilitator Kerkdenny Medina, a specialist in accessibility and universal design, together with guest speaker Tommy Guzmán, who highlighted the importance of Dominican Sign Language in overcoming communication barriers. The conference offered a technical and experiential vision on inclusion, accessibility and dignified treatment, addressing the main national laws, such as Law 5-13, Law 43-23 and Law 05-23, which support accessibility in the Dominican Republic.
One of the most impressive moments was the guided sensory experience, in which blindfolded attendees experienced dynamics that allowed them to reflect on autonomy, sensory barriers and the importance of accompaniment in service environments. This experience, complemented by an introduction to the Braille system and the alphabet, promoted empathy and the development of practical skills for inclusive care.
Topics such as universal design and accessibility in infrastructures were also addressed. The activity closed with a space for collective reflection where participants shared lessons learned and challenges to continue promoting a more accessible university culture.
This type of initiative reaffirms UNICARIBE’s commitment to building a diverse, accessible and respectful academic community, promoting dignified treatment and the elimination of barriers that limit the full participation of people with disabilities. Through formative actions that promote inclusion and social responsibility, the University of the Caribbean strengthens an ethical and sustainable institutional culture, aimed at ensuring equal opportunities and aligned with international standards of quality and social impact.
