Students of the Sustainable Development and Risk Management course at the University of the Caribbean (UNICARIBE), accompanied by their teacher, Professor Antonio Cena, participated in a significant academic excursion to the Dr. Rafael María Moscoso National Botanical Garden.

Purpose of the field trip:
The main purpose of this field trip was to strengthen the knowledge acquired in the subject Sustainable Development and Risk Management through direct observation of the natural environment, recognizing practices of environmental conservation, biodiversity, environmental education and sustainable actions. This visit allowed linking theory with practice, reflecting on the importance of ecological balance and responsible management of natural resources as key elements to reduce environmental risks and promote a truly sustainable development.

Visit to the School of Environmental Education:
The day began with an enriching visit to the School of Environmental Education of the National Botanical Garden, where students participated in an interactive talk about the objectives and mission of the garden. During this activity, topics such as the value of ecosystems, the impact of climate change, citizen responsibility in environmental protection, and the conservation of endemic and native species of the island were highlighted.

Tour of the Garden’s thematic areas:
Afterwards, students took a guided walking tour through several significant areas of the garden. They explored areas such as the medicinal plants area, the rainforest, the palmetum, the herbarium, among other spaces that highlight the botanical richness of the island. At each stop, a critical analysis of how these areas contribute to ecological sustainability and natural risk mitigation was promoted.

Tree planting:
As part of the commitment to sustainability, students actively participated in a tree planting day, strengthening the bond with nature and fostering a sense of environmental responsibility. This symbolic action represents a small but significant contribution to the fight against deforestation and climate change.

Tour on the Ecological Train:
To culminate the visit, participants boarded the Botanical Garden’s ecological train, which allowed for a panoramic tour of the entire park, reinforcing what they learned during the walk and appreciating in a broader way the biodiversity present in this important green lung of the city of Santo Domingo.
